The History of SAIL

SAIL High School began in 1975 as the School for Applied Individualized Learning. SAIL was founded on the belief that all students can learn and succeed when provided a learning environment that meets their needs and interests.

Accredited since 1982, SAIL was the first public alternative school in Florida to be fully accredited for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The SACS Accreditation team wrote, “At SAIL, there seems to be a cement of cooperation, respect, purpose and dedication to the common mission … it’s an outstanding model that should be emulated throughout the state”.

Over the years, SAIL has grown, but its adherence to that core ideal remains. While emphasizing individualization, democratic decision-making, and application of academics in a humanistic atmosphere, SAIL students meet the same educational requirements as other Leon County students. This approach is dynamic and ever-evolving, capitalizing on the talents and interests of a diverse staff and student body.

Graduates of SAIL and their families share powerful ties of loyalty to SAIL, a deep desire to see the school thrive, and an interest in helping future generations of SAIL students succeed. In 2020, this longing to stay connected and engaged prompted members of the SAIL community (alumni, teachers, administration, parents and friends) to form the SAIL High School Foundation.
